State law gives families the option to transfer to a different school when there is space available. When schools have space, families can choose to transfer to another school within a district (intradistrict transfers) or to transfer to a school in another district (interdistrict transfers).

SRVUSD has moved up its intradistrict open enrollment window for elementary families. The open enrollment window for elementary schools is now open and closes on April 6, 2018. Families can find the link to the online intradistrict transfer request form and information about SRVUSD’s open enrollment/intradistrict transfer process at www.srvusd.net/transfers.

SRVUSD students will continue to have placement priority in our schools. However, after we place our resident students at their school of choice, because we now have space available, California law requires that we allow students from outside the district to apply to attend our schools (interdistrict transfers). Interdistrict transfers will only be accepted if there is space available. Students from outside the district must maintain acceptable academic performance, attendance and behavior. SRVUSD anticipates openings for interdistrict transfers students at nearly all SRVUSD schools.

Greetings Venture Families!

The month of March is the gateway to spring and the spring season will be very busy at Venture with the end of the 3rd Quarter (March 9), High School CAASPP testing: 11th & 12th Grades (March 19 – 23), Spring Break (April 2-6), Elementary and Middle School CAASPP Testing: 3rd – 8th Grades (April 16 - 20), and much more to come.

“In the wake of any dark tragedy, we must believe in humanity's inherent goodness more than we ever have before.  It is the only way the good can win.”- Unknown

Due to the recent senseless tragedy in Florida, there has been a national conversation about how schools protect and support students in case of an emergency. Venture School regularly conducts monthly standardized response protocol emergency / safety drills (Fire, Secure Campus, Earthquake, and Hazardous Material) that we rotate (type of drill and time of day) to ensure students and staff are familiar with the drill types and the appropriate responses. The drills are guided exercises with announcements that explain the appropriate expectations for student and staff response.  As well, our school’s Site Council reviews, and revises our School’s Safety Plan yearly to ensure student safety. We certainly welcome parents to join our monthly Site Council meetings to help address the needs of our students with school safety.

For the month of March, we are highlighting our 6th Venture school wide Value: “Recognizing: The Venture School community recognizes that students who take responsibility for themselves and others are well prepared for success and happiness.”

The district’s Personalized Learning Initiatives, PLI, will be taking effect in the upcoming school year. The SRVUSD has created a website with valuable information regarding each initiative. The website is http://www.srvusd.net/personalizedlearning.

With one quarter of school remaining (March – May), we ask that all of our students please be proactive with your teachers to check course progress (what has / hasn’t been completed) so that you are aware of your progress and course credits.  Please don’t allow time to get past you make sure you follow up on your grades, projects, homework, and due dates with your teachers.

Don’t forget to put your scholastic book orders in by March 26th! www.scholastic.com/bookclubs CODE: RK7F8

We are excited to host Words Matter week at Venture during the week of February 5th – 9th. Words Matter Week stresses the importance of our words and the power our words have to build up or bring down those around us. The SRV PTA website mentions that “ongoing dialogue inspires students, staff, and parents to be mindful of the words they choose in day-to-day conversations, not only during this week of awareness, but all year long.” Most important is to make the collective commitment to think before we talk and be mindful of how our words affect others.  To help remind our students of the importance of Words Matter week, we have FREE handmade Words Matter zipper pulls found at sign in computer that each student can take with them.

Jennifer Bering a Senior here at Venture School created her own way to help our community in need.

Her fundraiser is called Your Change Can Change A Life

"Throughout this past month while watching all of the terrible news about families losing everything they owned in the horrific fires, I felt the need to help our community in anyway I could. I talked with friends and family about what I could realistically do and really the only option was to volunteer. I realized on my own I couldn’t do much, but with the help of the students and faculty at Venture, the impact could be much greater than I had hoped for.

"With the help of Venture, I want to help a family get back on their feet. I thought if students volunteered to bring in change from home it could add up to potentially have a huge impact on a family’s life.

"Grateful Gatherings is a charity where you get assigned a family to help them furnish their home. The family is donated a house but still need help to furnish the inside. That’s where we come in. We would furnish their house to the best of our ability to make them feel at home.

"A few years ago I helped family friends with this same charity. We took all of the furniture, appliances, etc. that were collected and set-up their home while they were at lunch. The look on their faces when they opened the door was something I’ll never forget. I want to be able to do the same for another family.

"I have provided each teacher at Venture, as well as, the front lobby with collection jars.  You’ll have plenty of time to drop your change in them as I will not be picking them up until December 19th.

"Thank you for your generosity."

Greetings Venture School Families,

Welcome to November! I would like to start November by thanking each of you for your commitment and support of our Venture School PTSA campaign to provide Youth Relief Kits in response to the fires in Napa and Sonoma.  As a school, we were able to send over 200 Youth Relief Kits that went immediately into the hands of students in need throughout the Sonoma Valley.  I was asked to pass on that “they appreciate your support and the love in the air that day was thicker than the smoke in Sonoma.” Great Job Vikings!

I would also like to thank our school community and the Venture School PTSA for recognizing Red Ribbon Week and reminding students about the dangers of drug abuse, using illegal drugs and/or medicine without a prescription. We also made Red pens available to all our students with label reminder about positive health and well-being. It was great to see the Red Ribbons throughout the campus as a reminder of our community commitment to student health and well-being. Thank you!

For the month of November, we are highlighting our 3rd Venture school wide Value: “Nurturing: The Venture School community helps students acquire the character strength to function in an increasingly challenging world.”

Lastly, we are excited to bring the Donors Choose crowdfunding opportunity to Venture School!  Donors Choose is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to bringing support, through direct online donations, to classroom and school project needs…and the donations are tax deductible!!!   Being one of the smaller schools in the SRVUSD means that we have a smaller budget than our comprehensive neighbors, even though we have the same needs as the larger comprehensive schools. Currently, the Donors Choose community has funded 12 Chromebooks for Venture School…we don’t want to stop there! All Venture teachers have active Donors Choose projects to be funded and have a deadline of December 31st. Please click the link below to learn about how to get involved:

https://www.donorschoose.org/donors/search.html?includeNearbyLocations=true&school=4245

November can be a challenging time for students as they strive to keep up with their assignments given the distraction of the holidays and breaks. Please encourage your student to take full advantage of the small group classes and labs, our open facility (8:30a – 3:30p) and working with the teachers to schedule productive study time at school and at home. For most students, devising a dedicated morning or afternoon block of time, dedicated to academics, seems to work best.

WANTED!!!

  • Ceramics Class – Venture School is offering 50% off our student and parent “Intro to Ceramics” course ($30 per couple) in November and December from 3:30p – 5:30p. See Venture Office Manager Dennice Barnes for details @ dbarnes@srvusd.net

Stay Healthy This Fall

With the change in the weather, it is easy to feel a little low on energy or possibly catch a cold.

Here are 6 ways to stay healthy this fall.  Since I’ve lost my voice, I know I should have had more of #3.

https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-6301/6-Ways-to-Stay-Healthy-This-Fall.html

Plan for the Break:

In the midst of hopefully the yummy food you will be eating and fun times to be had, plan ahead if there are extra tasks to complete since this is an extra week in the academic calendar.  If your child is behind in English by 2 tasks, choose the days that will work best to complete those assignments.  Monday and Wednesday from 10-12 and 2-4.  Give yourself time to rest, and complete your best work.  The week will come and go with travel, family, friends, and hopefully many laughs as well.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Please see the Registration Page.

Are you returning to Venture School?

Registration for Venture School 2017 – 2018 will look at little different than in previous years. This year, we are emailing the registration packets  to each Venture Primary Enrolled Family ( e.g. students who take four or more classes at Venture School).
Please check your email accounts ASAP as the Registration packet is attached.  We ask that each family print, COMPLETE, review and return the materials during the week of May 22nd – 26th from 9:00a to 3:00p (closed for lunch from 12:00p – 1:00p each day).

The early return of the registration materials will help us facilitate our enrollment, plan our master room schedule and allow us to better serve our Venture families.
If you have any questions about the registration materials please email

Venture Manager Dennice Barnes at Dbarnes@srvusd.net

In Partnership,

Matt Chamberlain
