What is Venture?

Venture School is the SRVUSD fully accredited public independent study school for students in grades K-12.  As an alternative education school, we are able to serve students whose needs may be best met through study outside of a traditional school setting. The flexibility of the independent study schedule gives students and families the opportunity to pursue personal interests outside the classroom, while engaging in studies that meet the educational requirements of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

Independent study is an alternative method of study, equal in quantity and quality to what students receive in a traditional school. While studying and assigned work will take about the same amount of time as in another school, the when and where, is less restricted. To ensure success, we recommend students engage daily in their studies. Students should expect to spend approximately five hours per week in study for each course they take. At Venture we provide students with access to a standards aligned education using SRVUSD approved curriculum. All courses are taught by credentialed SRVUSD teachers who meet with each student at least once a week.

Courses are offered in a variety of formats to meet the learning needs of our students:

  • Blended Learning classes: 6th-12th grade students can enroll in courses that use a blended learning format. These courses require that students engage in independent learning at home, and also participate in small group classes with a teacher for hands-on in person learning activities or labs to enrich their studies. The independent study provides background for the class activities, and the class activities provide context for the independent learning. Our art, math, science, and Spanish courses are offered through blended learning.

  • Independent Study classes: 6-12th grade students can enroll in courses that use an independent study format. The students are assigned work each week by a teacher and complete it at their own pace throughout the week. Through independent study, students learn time management skills and practice the self discipline that will be necessary for future success in all areas of life.

  • Concurrent Enrollment: 6-12th grade Venture students are able to take two courses at their resident middle school or high school.

  • Guided Study classes: K-5th grade students work at home daily with an adult (typically a parent or guardian) who will guide student learning and support engagement in the assigned learning activities and completion of assignments daily. During weekly meetings the teacher meets with both the adult and student to monitor progress and provide supervision. In the 2021-22 school year we plan to enhance the independent study experience by offering frequent group activities for our elementary students.

We have a school counselor and social worker available to provide support and guidance in the areas of academic and social/emotional support. We have a school psychologist and resource specialist; students with special education needs may participate in independent study with the agreement of their IEP team. High school students who enroll at Venture are able to take all of the courses they will need to meet the UC/CSU admissions criteria and to earn a high school diploma. Venture students are able to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities at the comprehensive school for their attendance area.

Transfer to Venture can be requested at any time during the school year. For requests made late in the summer or once school begins, the transfer will be approved when we can confirm available space at Venture School.
